A couple years ago, I took part in this Twitter thing called #MWE—which I believe stands for either Music Writing Experience or Music Writing Experiment (still waiting for the intern to come back with the research to confirm).
In a nutshell, each day in February you were supposed to listen to one of those albums you had never got around to listening to—a front to back listen—and then you were to craft a one tweet review. This was back in the 140 character days, so the editing was twice as restrictive as it is now.
Long story short, I really enjoyed the whole thing. But more than the enjoyment of the writing experience / experiment aspect of it (where is that intern?!), it was the idea of seeking out all those albums I was aware of but had never gotten around to listening to that struck the loudest chord for me. Having come of age in the pre-internet world, the amount of albums and artists in my peripheral that I had never properly listened to—well, the number is staggering. And exciting.
I mean, what better use for our current content-overload-free-for-all than to do a deep dive of all the music—the good and the bad—that you've never got around to?
Well, HI54LO5 is me basically continuing the #MWE idea beyond one month of the year.
I went with the review rule of ‘no more than 54 words, no less than 5’ because I’m a little bit of a high five for world play kinda guy. Also, I thought that upping the max to 54 words gave the review possibilities that little extra bit of head room that was missing from trying to fit things into 140 characters.
Of course, Twitter is now 280 characters, so I will probably do most of the future HI54LO5 reviews directly out on the socials. And I invite you to use #HI54LO5 to do your own '54 words or less’ reviews of albums you’ve listened to for the first time.
And then I’ll continue to collect a bunch of them back here on the blog for easy browsing.
